Holiday Style Inspiration For The Pierced & Proud

Holiday time brings out everyone’s festive side. But with all of the stress of holiday shopping, end of the semester exams, work deadlines, and trying to fit in family time, sometimes we forget to show ourselves a little TLC. Why not take some of that goodwill you’re feeling towards others and invest a bit in cultivating a surprisingly cool holiday look for yourself?

Ugly Christmas Sweater Swag:

Ugly Christmas Sweater Swag

For the all the nerds (and closet nerds) out there! Ugly Christmas sweaters have become a fashionable statement within pop culture. If your mind isn’t with the sci-fi geeks, there’s always comfy, cozy sweaters with holiday prints like reindeer and snowflakes. Trust me, showing up to a holiday party in something like this will make people jealous of your holiday cheer, even if you’re the grinchiest of people this time of year.

Simple As a Snowflake:

Simple As a Snowflake

Sometimes going all out for Christmas can feel a tad bit tacky. Instead of displaying your holiday style loudly, add a bit of sparkle here and there. Try adding some snowflakes to your nails if you’ve got the patience. A toothpick and some white nail polish can create a just left the salon look! Mix some pastels, silver and white into your makeup routine for a little tiny pop of holiday spirit.

Life Of The Holiday Party:

Life of the Holiday Party

For style that says “Look at me!” there’s one golden rule: Glitter! Sparkling gems aren’t always enough to complete a holiday party look, so embrace your inner diva and bring out the glitter. The bonus is your holiday style can be Christmas party perfect, and with a few extra sequins, you’re ready for New Year’s Eve too!

2016 Piercing Trends – Septum Piercings & Multiple Ear Piercings

If you’re the on-trend type, then maybe you already know this. The fashion world and celebrities are definitely into piercings, and this year is no exception. We decided to put together a guide to the piercing trends you’ll mostly likely be seeing a lot of in 2016.

Septum piercings have been on the rise in popularity for a few years now. We definitely won’t see a decline anytime soon! Jewelry for these piercings ranges from simple to elaborate designs, drawing inspiration from Middle Eastern culture. Septum clickers are the most popular style of jewelry used, but captive rings and horseshoe barbells are also a hit. And can you really deny the legitimacy of a piercing that emphasizes the perfect lip color? Absolutely not.

Multiple Ear Piercings

Pretty sure this trend has been around longer than the septum piercing. Something about it screams 90’s to me, in the best way possible. This would be one of the exceptions to the whole “less is more” rule. The more earrings, the better! There are so many unique ways to complete this look. Not to mention an array of sparkling jewelry to boot. Cartilage piercings like the rook, daith, tragus and helix are popular. For the daring, try the double hole piercing known as the scaffold or industrial!

Dermals – Look How Far We’ve Come

Look How Far We've Come

In the years since microdermal piercings have come into the mainstream, methods and materials have been perfected, and now that we’ve worked out the technical kinks, it’s that amazing time when the magic happens.  More jewelry is available, more modification artists are honing their craft, and more fun and interesting designs are popping up every day.  What started as single one point piercings performed with a punch, has gone full-out and head-on, ranging from multiple rows of piercings, to hot tattoo embellishments, and even large scale body designs of ever-increasing complexity.

 microdermal piercings being performed

One of the most popular places for women to get dermal piercings is on the cheek or around the eye.  Depending on the size of the jewelry, health of the skin, and shape of the eyes, this can include everywhere from just past the corner of the eye, to the top of the cheek just below the eye in front, to above the brow.  No matter where it is, it tends to look lovely and amazing.  (We’ve all got gorgeous eyes anyways, right ladies?)

Some other common locations for dermal designs include the chest/clavicle area, the back of the neck, the hips/ lower abdomen, the finger (generally where a ring would go), the wrist, the middle of the forehead/bindi area, and behind or directly in front of the ear.

And now for the best part of all: the fun new styles of jewelry.  Instead of just standard gems in varying sizes, we’ve got hearts, stars, teardrops, skulls, and just about anything else you can think of.  Kind of makes you want to get a dermal (or if you already have some, another dermal), doesn’t it?  Keep it going, trend-setters!

New Ways to Wear it: Chain Gang

 the chain jewelry trend

The hottest trend right now is chains, chains, and more chains! Put a little punk flair into your piercings with awesome body jewelry chains. Ear to nose, cartilage to lobe, cuff to lobe, tragus to cartilage, nipple to chains, slave bracelets and rings, body chains, and belly chains are all trending right now.

The ear cuff connected to an earring gives a faux cartilage piercing look that’s sweet for those of us who shirk modification commitment, or you could go for a barbell to barbell chain that connects cartilage piercings together. Popular styles of linked slave earrings include bohemian dream catchers, owls, hearts, stars, spikes, rosary beads, crosses, simple chains, and more.  For an ultra-modern style, many people will purposely wear mismatched earrings connected by chains.

cartilage, lobe, and nose chain jewelry

Nose chains originated in India and the Middle East, and are still used in Punjabi marital tradition. On a bride’s wedding night she wears a nose chain that connects to either an earring or her hair, then the groom ceremoniously removes the nose chain to symbolize her gift of virginity. Right now in Western culture nose chains have become popular in the Punk and Gothic subcultures. With the dawn of the modern body modification movement, chain link jewelry is much more prevalent in the everyday style of trendy youth. You can wear a simple hoop or a stylish stud in your nose piercing with a connecting chain that goes to a barbell, ball captive ring, or even an ear cuff.

Indian nose chain traditions

Nipple rings are much less taboo than ever before as well. The girl next door doesn’t flinch at the thought of getting her nipples pierced. Many business professionals will also opt for a nipple piercing, partially because it’s easily hidden.  It’s sometimes fun and liberating to have a “normal” looking exterior with naughty piercings hidden underneath, and nipple chains are a sexy way to connect your favorite hidden piercings. From simple chain strands, to elaborate Swarovski crystals these chains come in pretty much every style.

Belly chains are great for those with a belly piercing that want to decorate their back and midriff a little more. The chain connects to a belly button ring and lays on the hips or lower abdomen, making it perfect for special occasions or belly-baring hobbies like tribal dance. Non-pierced belly and body chains are also a stylish and flirty way to decorate your body.  Body chains can be worn around the belly, around the shoulders, across the chest like a harness or vest, or on the arms or legs.

Chain body jewelry is now popular for more than just punks. There’s a body chain look for every type of style.

Halloween Costumes for the Modified – She’s the Man

females costuming as male characters

The modified generation is raising the bar for true equality, so why would all of us modified missies stick with traditionally female costumes?  Some of the coolest characters in our lives are male, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to play the part.  Just check out all these awesome male characters that are being given a breath of fresh air and a pinch of pizzazz by modified ladies around the world:

Alice in Wonderland

This an awesome story no matter which way you slice it, especially since the punchy protagonist is a chick!  Aside from the devilish Queen of Hearts though, most of the other awesome characters are male.  It’s totally okay though, because some of neatest Alice in Wonderland costumes for women are, believe it or not, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire Cat.  Just check ’em out.  Seriously hot, cool, and creepy, right?

The Marvel Universe

In the world of Marvel and DC comics, there are plenty of female characters, but unfortunately most of them are secondary characters.  Bat girl, Supergirl, Spidergirl… For all of us pierced and tatted hotties who want to be the star of the show instead of playing sidekick to a rippling superhero, there’s nothing wrong with wearing the same exact thing that your fave male hero wears.  It’s great that there are “female versions” of a lot of hero and villain costumes, but just because we’re ladies doesn’t mean there has to be a skirt.

Tim Burton

Tim Burton has created a world teaming with female stars, and for that we thank him more than morbid words can say, but who can resist wanting to be all of the subjects in his awesome creative masterpieces?  Three male Burton characters that win my vote for female cross-over: Edward Scissorhands, Jack Skellington, and Beetlejuice.  If you’re planning to pull that last one though, remember to get your hair nice and big.  (We wouldn’t want anyone to think that you’re supposed to be Robin Thicke.)

New Ways to Wear it – Dangle Plugs

new plug trend

The biggest problem faced by those of us with stretched lobes is not being able to wear those fun, glamorous dangle drop earrings that we all love so much. Well, not anymore! Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Plugs are made to fit in stretched ear lobes. New dangle saddle plugs have additional ornaments and dangling charms attached to them. They come in a variety of styles, from ornaments with extra long chains, faceted flowers, and brilliant crystals, to bold black flowers and hearts with charms like skulls or pistols for an edgier take on the trend. This look is perfect for any fancy special occasion such as a wedding, prom, or just a night on the town. Dangle plugs are perfect for any pretty girly girl or punk rocker chick who wants to make a big statement with her jewelry.

cool plugs with built in dangles

If you prefer tunnel plugs but still want the dangle you are also in luck. There are now special earrings that are made specifically for people with stretched ear lobes. The dangle earring is attached to a hoop that is inserted through your tunnel and then secured. And as most of us already know, regular hoop earrings and BCRs that are big enough can also be worn through tunnels or eyelets.

Whether your style is simple and elegant sparkle or alternative and edgy, the dangle plugs and tunnel plugs with hoop earrings are two looks that are really growing in popularity, so they’re both definitely one to try.

Twist on Tradition – the New State of Ear Piercings

Ear piercings are supposed to be some of the most common piercings on the face of the earth, right?  So I decided to go in search of the fun ways that people were taking these now “old news” piercings and reinventing them.  And some of the neat things I found are anything but ordinary.  Check it out:

Happenin’ Helixes

helix ear piercings and jewelry

Some of the things that people are doing to decorate their multiple helix piercings are absolutely amazing.  Sometimes it’s hard to tell exactly what types of jewelry are being coordinated together (like with this spiral/stud combo).

Extreme Stretch

multiple stretched ear piercings

It seems that stretching multiple ear piercings, whether in the lobe, helix, or other cartilage areas, is becoming a pretty big trend.  I love the multiple stretched piercings with the spiral barbell wound through, don’t you?

Industrialized Nation

cool new industrial piercing styles

As industrials become more and more common, new sets of industrial style piercing that go through multiple points does too.  Just take a look at the helix-rook-tragus industrial here, and the fun jewelry being worn in verticals (like this cute trident made of an industrial bar and a stylized horseshoe).

In the quest for the coolest ear piercing/jewelry combo, it doesn’t look the race will be over any time soon.

I Heart Valentines Day – Hearts and Piercing Culture

Valentines Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by having a virtual party featuring one of my favorite things: the heart!

Alternative Valentines Day

Hearts and piercing culture have long been interwoven, especially in the world of pierced retro pinups and fabulously fun scene girls.  A symbol of romance, sweetness, and youthful femininity, it’s no wonder that the phrase “we love it,” has been almost entirely replaced by “we heart it.”  And just so everyone knows, I happen to heart hearts!

cool heart-centric piercings

From dermal piercings, shaped and stretched lobes, and sassy circular lip rings, to body art, color tattoos, and everything else involved in alternative culture, one of the most prevalent and universal motifs in the world and the alt world is the heart.  So much so that all of us seem to love it, even when it’s broken.

Heart body art and mods

So I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ll definitely be spending this Valentine’s Day having a seriously heart filled celebration.  (And a heart shaped box of chocolates might not be so bad either.) ♥

Coolest Piercings We’ve Ever Seen – Holiday Edition

In this edition of coolest piercings we’ve ever seen: dermals go deer-like, candy canes get repurposed, and fancy Holiday body jewelry gets taken to an entirely new level.

Cute Holiday Candy Cane Piercings

So most of us have seen some weird and interesting things come out of the world of dermal jewelry, but when did horns suddenly go mainstream?  That’s right, it’s now not only normal, but actually kind of cute to have microdermal, transdermal, or even subdermal horns.  The thing that translates so well into pop culture is that the horns themselves (at least those that have become fairly popular) are less outlandish and frightening, and more innocent and fawn-like.  Horns = cute…..who knew?

Reindeer Horn Piercing

Next on our list: candy canes become multi-purpose.  Okay, so stretching of the ear is nothing new, but the thing that makes this especially cool isn’t the piercing itself, but the choice of jewelry.  You might be thinking that this is so much less extreme than what I usually feature, but there’s no denying that everyone who sees this is going to wish that they thought of it.  I know I do!  Looking cute for the Holidays and having a built in snack?  Pretty sweet.

Candy Canes in Stretched Lobes

And finally, the best has been saved for last.  It’s beautiful, it’s bionic, it’s….really attached?  The answer to that question is a resounding yes.  The newest and most interesting thing to hit body piercing since the invention of the curved piercing needle gives seriously new meaning to the phrase “body jewelry.”  This unique method of body mod uses dermal anchors and surface bars to attach beautiful metal plating to the skin.  Most often paired with ink in celestial or tribal designs, this fun and fancy new form of super-piercing lets you go all out when the occasion calls for it, and then remove layers of bling when it’s time to relax.

Dermal Plate Piercings

Now that’s got to be one of the coolest piercings you’ve ever seen, right?
