Alternative Holiday Fashion- Season of the Snowflake

Alternative Winter Style

Even though it’s entirely too cold (I live in the wonderful state of New York), I still love Winter, and especially the holiday season.  Sure, there’s absolutely ridiculous traffic jams and every time I go shopping it feels like a rerun of The Hunger Games (every woman for herself), but it’s worth it for good food and amazing Winter fashion.

beautiful snowy white hair styles

Like the whole white hair thing.  Love it.  Afraid my hair would fall out if I tried to do it (brunettes unite!), but on everyone who pulls it off this look is incredibly cute.  Snowy white hair against paled Winter skin and accessorized with cool crystal and steel: perfect.

adorable snowy nail designs

Snowflake nail art is amazing too.  So pretty, and intricate-looking no matter which way you view it, even it was pretty easy to accomplish.

awesome snowflake motif tattoos

Then there’s the snowflake tattoo art.  These generally range from incredibly simple monochrome, to ridiculous cool pale blue, wind-blown, in your face super snow.  This is something I’ve seriously been thinking about indulging in this year, to commemorate the true snow-survivalist New Yorker in me.  I guess we’ll just have to see.

sweet snowflake body jewelry

Oh yeah, and last but not least, adorable snowflake body jewelry.  I love her nose ring, don’t you?  What does everyone else think about Winter motifs in alternative fashion?

Fall Body Mod and Jewelry- Talkin Turkey

brilliant Fall fashion

Watching Fall style evolve around this years Pantone Institute color “Tangerine Tango” has been super fun ( not to mention beautifully bright), but with Thanksgiving coming up in a few days, there’s been a lot of interesting turkey-day-based fashion too.  Just check this out.

amazing turkey art tatts

Best…turkey…art…EVER!  I never thought that a giant tattoo of a turkey would be something I’d be interested in, but these works of art created by talented tattooists have totally changed my opinion.  I love the bright colors, the blend of realism and detail cartooning, and of course the beautiful Autumn elements they’ve brought into the backgrounds.  Absolutely stunning.

funky turkey feather earrings

And these sweet ideas for ear jewelry made with turkey feathers are perfect for dolling up during a season of snow.  (I don’t know about you, but when the temperature drops, my ears are just about the only skin that remains exposed.  So chilly!)

awesome orange hairdos

Which brings us back to the tangerine for a moment.  Orange is a very turkey color, and it’s absolutely amazing how many truly gorgeous orange hairdos have been showing up this season.  Fresh, energetic, and definitely unexpected, I’m lovin’ the fearlessness going on in the alternative fashion world right now.  Have a great Thanksgiving, and don’t forget to spill your own favorite part of Turkey Day fashion in the comments

New Trends in Body Mod – Valley of the Dolls

model Lily Cole as a living dollLily Cole photographed by Sølve Sundsbø

So I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s noticed a certain trend floating through fashion shoots, body modification, and photo diaries lately.  Women who are making themselves look like living dolls.

some of the nets most popular human dolls“human dolls” Anzhelica Kenova, Valeria Lukyanova, Venus Palermo, Dakota Rose, and Anastasiya Shpagina

This started a few years ago with clever makeup, then plastic surgery, (and of course photoshop) and just ballooned from their until it founds its way into tattooing, piercings, cosmetology, editorials, runway, and just about everything else.  And now for your viewing pleasure, some interesting “dollisms” to help break down this rising fad.

First off, most of the young women who are known on the internet for their doll-like looks are very accomplished makeup artists.  In fact, a couple of them are makeup artists by trade, and many have also done modeling work and been shown how to use makeup to transform their features.

Next, there’s also our good old friend, the circle lens.  These little babies make the eye appear huge by distorting the size of the iris and pupil.  They’ve been around for a while, but didn’t reach the peak of popularity and availability until they were used as part of Lady Gaga’s wardrobe in the music video for her hit “Bad Romance.”  Next time you see someone who looks like they have large eyes, take a good look.  Once you’ve seen the difference, the lenses are pretty easy to spot.

Then we have corsetry.  Although some of the tiny-waisted living dolls out there are rumored to have had surgery (including the removal of ribs, Ouch!), a couple of them appear to have used corsetry, including tightlacing, to achieve their unbelievable dimensions.

Finally, there’s the rising trend of doll-style tattoos.  Amongst the most popular body art motifs are buttons and zippers, garters/bows, and corset laces.  Pretty much anything that makes the subject appear to be sewn or buttoned up like a rag doll fits the bill.  (I have to admit, I love the buttons!)

Also, a few of the human dolls out there have incorporated body piercings.  This is mostly belly rings, but other tiny and feminine piercings like those around the nose and lips have also made their way into the mainstream.  One of America’s most famous dolls, KotaKoti, has often been photographed wearing two cute little studs in her snake bite lip piercings.

So what do you think about the living doll trend?  Human barbies: hot, or not?

Halloween – Jewelry, Makeup and Vampires

It’s time again for Halloween, and with everything floating around the modification and alternative fashion world right now, I decided to pull some of my favorite picks.  Here we go:

awesome creepy piercings and tattoo art

Check out this super fun Halloween ear jewelry.  I love the idea of wearing plugs that look like a jack o’ lantern.

fun black and orange ear jewelry

And for people who don’t have their ears pierced, cuff jewelry is perfect, like these fun little Day of the Dead style charms.

flirty zombie Halloween makeup

A lot of makeup styles are really popular this year, especially amongst the modified community, but I think sexy zombies, sugar skull faces, and pop art makeup based on the artwork of Roy Lichtenstein top the list.

pretty Day of the Dead style skull face makeup

Plus, they’re easy to replicate, and there’s fun makeup tutorials all over the internet in print and on video to help anyone get these looks.

cute vampire girl snarling

I guess we can blame the Twilight franchise for vampisms continuing their amazing popularity, but there’s definitely an upside to it: hyper-availability of cute and kitschy vamp jewelry.  Tell me that you love this necklace as much as I do!

And finally, my prediction for most popular Halloween costume this year: Snow White.

pretty pierced girl dressed as SNow White

Even though we can definitely expect to see more black swan dancers, corpse brides, Snookies, and super heroes, I think that Snow White (especially hilariously naughty takes) is primed to blow up huge this year.  Let me know what you think will be the most popular/best costume for 2012 in the comments.

Epic Wins – Unique piercing and Tattoo Successes

Seen anything really funny on the internet lately?  I know I have, so I thought I’d take a moment to give credit where credit is due, to all of the awesome (and slightly twisted) minds that come up with those little sweetnesses that get us through the day.  Starting with…

webbed toes with hilarious tattoos

the best use of webbed toes, EVER.  Then onto the guy that decided to see just how many times a single tongue can be pierced.

Moving on to the best case of tragedy turned modification coolness that I’ve ever seen.

awesome shark arm tattoo

Then to what constitutes possibly the most amazing use of clear large gauge body jewelry on the web.  Did I mention that the phrase “show your teeth” will have an entirely new meaning from now on?

Next we go to a definite winner in the “ink plus body hair equals awesome” category.  Talk about making a hairstylist’s day.

And who could forget: sweetest custom nose jewelry on the planet Earth.  (Do you think he was trying to raise awareness about the illegal poaching of African Elephants for their ivory?)

And finally, the girl who said with tattoo art what we’re all feeling every time we pop in a set of earbuds.

So thanks modification pioneers, for turning up the volume and letting loose the funny.  What would Google do without you?

Daydream Nation – A Tribute to End of Summer Fashion

Ah, Summer.  By far the best of all the seasons.  Warm, hazy, relaxing, magical, and absolutely going to be pined over relentlessly during the impending Winter.  So as Summer fades quietly and softly to a close, lets remember the good times that transpired these past months, shall we?

What did you do this Summer?  Just hanging out with friends?

Or maybe a little romance.

Perhaps some new adventures, getting piercings or tattoos.

Or was there an anything-but-typical road trip?  Cars overheating, motels in the desert, the famous Route 66, and all of the beachside bonfires and iced gas station coffee that one person can handle.

hot Summer road trips

Yep.  Summer might be over, but I know that we’ll all be thinking of it every time we rub our gloves together and cling to the thermos that’s saving our cold season sanity.

Heart Shaped Box – Red Revival

Okay, so I know that this year’s “official” color (at least according to the authorities at the Pantone Institute) is “Tangerine Tango,” but all of these awesome shades of red are close enough right?

hot red style

Red has always been one of my fave fall colors, and it happens to be one of the few color families that has nearly unlimited hues that fall under its umbrella.

cool red piercing jewelry

Makes you wanna go crazy for crimson, doesn’t it?  It’s okay.  You go nuts searching and snapping and shopping up everything red, and I’ll just wait right here. Okay, so maybe I’ll beef up my own collection of ravishing red stuff while I wait.  You can really never have too much.

Fashion Flash – Modern Nose Piercing

Slave to Symmetry

symmetrical nose and facial piercings

I love when facial piercings in particular are kept symmetrical.  It’s a very fresh and fun look, and in many cases fakes a look of symmetry to the face (which as we all know, nobody’s face is perfectly symmetrical).  It seems to work particularly well with nose piercings involved.

Super Stretched

cool stretched nose and septum piercings

I’ve always been incredibly fascinated by the stretching of nose piercings.  It seems like the flesh of a lip piercing or an ear piercing would be relatively easy to stretch because of its texture, elasticity, and general degree of pliability.  But for cartilage piercings like those in the nose, it looks like it would be decently tough!  Kudos nostril and septum stretchers!

Indian style nose jewelry

Ah, the Indian style nose hoop.  Is there anything cooler?  Remember back in 2010 when every celebrity in the world seemed to be so into this?  I think the best thing about this style is that in varying degrees pretty much anybody can pull it off.  (Love the chains too.)

Fact or Faked? – Plug it In

Most of us know how to use photoshop programs (some of us a little too well), so how do you tell if what you’re seeing is real.  Here we examine some of the neatest, most hilarious, and provocative piercing and tattoo photos on the web and find out if they’re fact, or just clever fakes.

The USB Piercing

Anyone who feels like they’re permanently connected to Facebook probably laughed about the irony the first time they saw this picture, but did someone really get multiple custom microdermal implants to make themselves appear to be a cyborg?

sweet photo of cyborg piercing

Unfortunately, the answer is no.  When you look at this picture closely, you can see a slight differentiation in color and texture just around the ports themselves.  Plus, the skin ridges or “rims” around the two headphone jacks are a little to perfect to be real human flesh.  It’s even easier to see when you invert the image.

inverted close-up of USB piercing

And finally, all it takes is another visit to our friends at Worth1000 to figure out that this is a photoshopped picture that was submitted to them.

The Verdict

Although it would be absolutely amazing, noone has been implanted with a fake USB port.  At least, not yet.
